Media Release - 30 January 2008

The Transport Accident Commission has launched its new Community Road Safety Grants program, to further assist communities to address local road safety issues.

The State Government through the TAC has made a significant commitment to the program which will run over four years, with the first round of funding now open.

Member for Bendigo West, Bob Cameron, said some of the most effective road safety strategies are created and implemented by local people.

“It’s the responsibility of all road users to make our roads safe and it’s the people who live in the community and use the roads, who are often best equipped to identify specific problems and implement solutions,” he said.

Funding will be open to community based projects conducted by not-for-profit groups that can show a specific problem and create a project to address it.

RoadSafe’s, Andrew Smith, welcomed the new grants program and said it provides a great opportunity for groups to make a difference in their own communities.

“Working within your own community to improve road safety can have a significant impact and save lives,” he said.

“The Community Road Safety Grants gives groups access to up to $20,000 in funding, to either develop or introduce new programs.”

The TAC’s Senior Manager of Road Safety, David Healy, said the TAC is seeking applications for projects that address a broad range of road safety issues.

“This is an opportunity to identify and distribute funding to groups who are involved in positive activities to help reduce the road toll.  Projects might target a specific problem, issue or group,” he said.

The TAC is holding information sessions across Victoria in February. For a copy of the guidelines explaining how to apply, or for more information about the Community Road Safety Grants program visit the TAC website.
