MEDIA RELEASE: 11 June 2009

Don’t let shortest lunch be your last

The Transport Accident Commission urges people attending the Shortest Lunch next weekend to plan ahead and avoid drink driving.

The TAC’s Senior Manager of Road Safety David Healy said with incentives for designated drivers and breathalysers at many wineries, there was no excuse for drink driving.

"Now is the time to plan your visit to the Yarra Valley," Mr Healy said.

"Decide on a designated driver from your group and support them to drive safely."

"Nine people have already died on roads in the Yarra Ranges in 2009. Drive safely during the Festival and make sure there are no more tragedies for local families," Mr Healy said.

The TAC is providing breathalysers at 14 wineries and designated drivers can enter a draw to win a case of wine to enjoy later.

Handy tips for the Shortest Lunch:

  • plan ahead and organise a non-drinking designated driver
  • if you’re drinking, make sure you eat regularly
  • alternate your alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks
  • use the breathalysers at the wineries but remember that your blood alcohol level can continue to rise after you have stopped drinking. Don’t drive if you are unsure.
  • track your consumption based on a standard drink (about 100ml of wine) and don’t drive if unsure you are under the limit.
