The Transport Accident Commission is calling on Victorian consumers to put their families first by demanding safety features in new cars.

The TAC has launched a safety display car at the Melbourne International Motor Show today.

The safety display car is a five-star rated Ford Falcon FG G6 Sedan which illustrates the safety features that should be included in all new cars.

The TAC’s Road Safety Manager Samantha Cockfield said it was up to Victorian drivers to ensure that key safety features became standard in new cars.

“If everyone upgraded their car to the safest in its class, the Victorian road toll could be cut by a third overnight,” Ms Cockfield said.

“Your car’s safety features could mean the difference between life and death for you or a member of your family.”

Two Australian manufactured cars now have a five star safety rating – the Ford Falcon FG and the Holden Commodore VE Omega as well as a range of imported vehicles. The TAC will be drawing attention to other cars with key safety features during the Motorshow.

Ms Cockfield said the TAC expected that over the next decade, new safety technology developments would demand increased attention.

“These include Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), active head restraints, assisted braking systems, driver fatigue detection and land departure warning,” Ms Cockfield said.
