MEDIA RELEASE: 21 April 2010

The Transport Accident Commission is seeking tenders for purpose-built accommodation for people with severe injuries from road trauma.

Innovative infrastructure solutions are sought for TAC clients with specific accommodation needs as they learn to live with their injuries.

The TAC's Chief Executive Officer Janet Dore said severely injured clients faced limited options for suitable housing and accommodation in the community.

"The unfortunate reality of road trauma is not just the road toll, but the severe injuries caused by transport accidents, such as quadriplegia," Ms Dore said.

The TAC expects about 10 new clients per year to require supported accommodation.

"They may require high levels of support services to help them in everyday activities and in working towards independence," Ms Dore said.

"The TAC encourages independence, supporting people to act as independently as possible, doing things for themselves and participating in everyday life."

"Increased participation is known to lead to increased confidence, enhanced self esteem and a greater sense of wellbeing – ultimately, better health outcomes for our severely injured clients," Ms Dore said.

Support services are currently provided in clients' homes, shared accommodation and in the community, such as nursing homes.

The TAC now seeks innovative solutions to provide this support in a wider range of accommodation options for clients.

The accommodation could include clusters of stand-alone dwellings, multi-unit complexes or traditional houses.

The two-stage Request for Proposal process is now open.
