MEDIA RELEASE: 4 March 2010

A comprehensive list of cars crash tested by ANCAP in 2009 has been released with two thirds earning a five star rating.

The ANCAP Victorian partners, VicRoads, RACV and the TAC have released the Class of 2009 list, all cars tested by ANCAP and EuroNCAP last year.

A NCAP Council Chair and VicRoads Vehicle Safety Manager Ross McArthur said the Volvo XC60 received the highest safety score.

"It is pleasing that almost two thirds of the cars tested earned five star ratings, while 12 received four stars," Mr McArthur said.

"What further distinguishes each car is its combined score out of 40. The Volvo XC60 scored 36.53."

"At the other end of the safety spectrum the Proton Jumbuck and Nissan Urvan sit close together at the bottom of the list with 8.39. Both these vehicles received a one star rating," Mr McArthur said.

TAC Road Safety Manager Samantha Cockfield said the Class of 2009 list gave new car buyers options for the top safety rating in every class of vehicle.

"The Victorian ANCAP partners have been encouraged to see great improvements in some of the manufacturers’ scores over the past few years," Ms Cockfield said.

RACV Chief Engineer, Vehicles, and ANCAP Program Manager Michael Case said with car manufacturers now making five star vehicles very affordable, car buyers owed it to themselves and to their loved ones to only consider five star safety.

"Some new entrants performed poorly, like the Great Wall utes that earned only two stars. We hope to see much better results in the future," Mr Case said.

"We are also seeing much safer options for tradespeople."

"The locally-built Holden Commodore ute and the Mercedes Vito and Viano are now five stars and show that commercial operators have safer choices available," Mr Case said.
