MEDIA RELEASE: 28 February 2010

The TAC Minister Tim Holding has launched the report A Decade of  Reducing Road Trauma.

The report shows that while the number of road fatalities has dropped by 29 per cent, young drivers are still over -represented.

Mr Holding said that while the statistics showed that significant progress had been made there was still plenty more to be done.

"Too many probationary drivers continue to die on our roads," Mr Holding said.

"Young drivers remain vastly over-represented due to higher risk taking behaviours and inexperience.

Mr Holding said the introduction of the Graduated Licensing System in 2008 was helping young people be better drivers from as soon as they get their Learners Permit.

"One death on our road is one too many so we need to do everything we can to equip our young drivers with the skills they need to be safe drivers," he said.

"The time that parents spend with their kids in the car giving them the benefit of more experience on the road may save their lives."

Mr Holding launched the report at Victoria Park with the support of the Calder Cannons TAC Cup team.
