MEDIA RELEASE: 24 March 2011

A Narre Warren man last week pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrate's Court to defrauding the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) of over $13,000 over 14 months.

22-year-old Nathan Bartlett contravened the Transport Accident Act 1986 by claiming loss of earnings benefits to which he was not entitled.  He returned to work whilst receiving these benefits from the TAC and did not inform the TAC that he had returned to work.

The court found Bartlett guilty of fraudulently obtaining a benefit contrary to section 116 of Transport Accident Act 1986.

Bartlett was sentenced without conviction and ordered to pay $13,877.26 in restitution and $300 for legal costs.  He was also ordered by the Court to undertake a positive lifestyle program in conjunction with a 12 month good behaviour bond.

A TAC spokesperson said the organisation took fraud very seriously and where there was evidence of misconduct, the TAC would exercise its strong legislative powers to investigate and prosecute.
