MEDIA RELEASE: 18 OCTOBER 2011

Race goers heading to the Geelong Cup tomorrow have been given a free, potentially life-saving tip by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC): Plan your day in advance and look after your mates.

With fine weather and big crowds predicted, the TAC urged all punters to take extra time to plan their travel to and from the track.

The TAC's Chief Executive Officer, Janet Dore, said planning your day could take less time than getting a spray tan, or finding a new tie for the big event.

"Do yourself a favor and arrange a designated driver, catch the shuttle bus or get a taxi," Ms Dore said.

"We know that drink driving contributes to a third of deaths on country roads, and in particular Geelong has had a problem with drink driving over the past few years.

"There are many options available to help you get home tomorrow evening, and there are no excuses for drink driving."

Trackside tomorrow the TAC is providing free breath testing throughout the day to help race goers monitor the effect of their alcohol consumption, as well as water bottles.

"If you are near or over the limit, don't drive. It's not worth the risk of losing your license, or worse, killing yourself or someone you love," Ms Dore said.

The TAC is a partner of Country Racing Victoria to ensure country racing events are enjoyed responsibly.

Here are some handy tips to enjoy the racing season safely:

  • Eat regularly if you are planning to drink alcohol
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones
  • Don't drive if you’re unsure about your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC); test yourself first at a free TAC breathalyser station
  • Remember that your BAC can rise after you have stopped drinking
  • Avoid the confusion and leave the car at home.

"The Geelong Cup is a great, local event and we want you to enjoy it so you can come back again next year," Ms Dore said.
