MEDIA RELEASE: 15th June 2011

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is calling on artists who have experienced road trauma to enter their work in a client art exhibition.

Picture This, an exhibition of inspiring work by TAC clients, will be at Geelong Gallery from July 30 to September 4.

The exhibition will showcase pieces by people who were artists before being involved in a transport accident, have taken up art since or have included art therapy in their rehabilitation.

Now in its third year, Picture This is the chance for TAC clients to share their experiences of road trauma through art.

TAC Chief Executive Officer Janet Dore said life after a transport accident was about more than recovering from physical injury.

"It can also be about the emotional trauma of dealing with the accident, adapting to changed circumstances and the impact of the accident on family and friends," Ms Dore said.

Art therapy has long been known to offer therapeutic and diagnostic benefits and Ms Dore encouraged clients to enter their work.

"The advantage of art therapy is that it allows anyone, of any age to express how they are feeling," Ms Dore said.

Several of the artists who entered Picture This in the past have significant injuries from road trauma, including quadriplegia and acquired brain injuries.

"The TAC recognises that art can help our clients reconnect with their bodies after suffering injuries and it is a way to rebuild skills and improve confidence," Ms Dore said.

Artists can enter online at www.tac.vic.gov.au/clientzone or telephone 03 5225 6504. Artwork entered can include paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics, jewellery and mosaics. Entries close June 30, 2011.

Artists have a chance to win the People's Choice Award as voted by exhibition visitors. The prizes are Art Supply vouchers worth $500, $250 or $100.
