MEDIA RELEASE: 26 July 2011

The newest Ford Territory model has been awarded an extension of its 5-star safety rating in the latest announcement from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

ANCAP also announced 4-star safety ratings for the Toyota Rukus and the Mitsubishi Pajero.

Supported by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), ANCAP has urged manufacturers and importers to provide the safest vehicles possibly for new car buyers.

The TAC's Road Safety Manager, Samantha Cockfield, said Victoria's road toll could be cut by a third overnight if everyone upgraded their car to the safest in its class.

"Affordable, safe and fuel efficient new cars that have the best safety features are a viable alternative," Ms Cockfield said.

More information about safe cars on the market is available on the TAC's How Safe Is Your Car website
