MEDIA RELEASE: 25 March 2011

As the Melbourne Grand Prix action heats up the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) have issued a warning to all F1 fans to leave the speed at the track and drive safely this weekend.

Six people died on the roads over the Grand Prix weekend last year including two motorists, three motorcyclists and one pedestrian.

TAC Head of Community Relations, Phil Reed, reminded GP fans to leave the high-speed racing to the experts.

"F1 drivers are performing in a controlled environment that does not compare to streets and roads outside the track," Mr Reed said.

"There is absolutely no excuse for speeding, and if you do – you’ll be caught, or worse, you’ll seriously injure or kill yourself or someone else."

The TAC is using this weekend’s race to target motoring fans with vehicle safety messages, in timing with the launch of the latest How Safe is Your Car? website.

The website www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au provides users with the opportunity to find out how their car would cope in the event of a crash, and what the safest cars on the market are.

Mr Reed said if every Victorian upgraded their car to the safest on the market, the road toll could be cut by one third.

"Vehicle safety plays a key role in our road safety strategy, and we want to ensure it plays a key role in determining which vehicle you choose when you’re next looking to buy a car," he said.

"This weekend’s focus on cars and the GP provides the perfect opportunity for us to engage with car lovers and educate them about the importance of driving a safe car."

The TAC suggests looking out for the following safety features when browsing the market:

  • Reverse cameras and sensing systems
  • Seatbelt reminders
  • Three point seat belts
  • Dual stage airbags
  • Curtain airbags
  • Thorax airbags
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

If you’re heading to the Grand Prix this weekend the TAC encourages you to visit them at their stand in F1 Central.
