MEDIA RELEASE: 17 March, 2011

Melbournians planning on pouring down a pint for St Patrick's Day are encouraged to enjoy it responsibly and pay the TAC's breath testing leprechauns a visit.

The leprechauns will be providing free breath tests to patrons at Bridie O'Reillys in the CBD from 12pm today to ensure people don't drink and drive.

What: TAC leprechauns breath testing St Patrick's Day revellers
Where: Bridie O'Reilly's – 62 Little Collins Street, Melbourne CBD
When: Today between 12 and 2pm

The TAC's Head of Community Relations, Philip Reed, said people could avoid being a bloody idiot by leaving the car at home.

"Drink driving contributes to about a third of deaths on our roads and I don't want to see St Patrick's Day celebrations turn into commiserations," Mr Reed said.

"I encourage revellers to use public transport or take a taxi home. If you are traveling by car, decide on a designated driver and support them to drive safely," Mr Reed said.

"Drink driving is not worth the risk of losing your licence, your life or the life of someone you care about," Mr Reed said.

The TAC is providing free breath tests at Bridie O'Reilly's to help revellers monitor the effect of their alcohol consumption.

Here are some handy tips to avoid being a bloody eejit this St Patrick's Day:

  • Eat regularly if you are planning to drink alcohol
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones
  • Don't drive if you're unsure about your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)
  • Remember that your BAC can rise after you have stopped drinking
  • Avoid the confusion and leave the car at home.
