Ambulance services
If you’ve been in a transport accident, the TAC will pay for your emergency ambulance services or air ambulance.
We will also pay for non-emergency medical transport, such as travel between hospitals.
How we pay for ambulance
We will pay Ambulance Victoria directly.
If you have already paid, scan or take a photo of your receipt. Send it to us with the ‘Upload documents’ button on myTAC, or by email to info@tac.vic.gov.au and we will repay you.
What do ambulance services do?
Ambulances provide emergency patient transport in serious medical emergency circumstances and in non-emergency circumstances
You may need an ambulance to take you to hospital after your transport accident, or an ambulance may be needed to take you from one hospital to another.
We’re here to help you get your life back on track after your transport accident. To help transport you to hospital we will pay for ambulance services provided in Australia.
What do ambulance services do?

TAC approved services
You won’t need to pay if you are taken to hospital in an ambulance after your transport accident. Emergency ambulance services, including air ambulances, are already approved.
At the hospital, your doctors may recommend that you use non-emergency patient transport to:
- Get from the hospital to your home
- Get to another hospital
- Get from the hospital to a relative or carer’s house, following your inpatient stay.
This non-emergency patient transport has also been approved, to make sure that you travel safely when a taxi or other vehicle is not sufficient.
When needed, we will work with your treating team to help them coordinate the ambulance services and support you need.
We may contact your doctor to discuss your ambulance requirements, your progress or request an assessment, to make sure that:
- You have access to the most appropriate treatment and support.
- You are getting proven, evidence-based treatment and not receiving treatment that isn't helping you recover.
- You are moving towards getting your life back on track or being able to live independently.
How treatments and services are paid for
If your accident happened in Victoria, we will pay Ambulance Victoria directly. You don’t need to do anything.
If you have already paid for your ambulance, you can use myTAC to submit your receipt and ask us to repay you. Ambulance Victoria memberships do not cover ambulance services that we can pay for.
We pay for your services in line with our responsibilities under the Transport Accident Act 1986.
What we won’t pay for
We can’t pay for services that:
- Are not needed because of your transport accident injuries.
- Are not reasonable, necessary or appropriate.
- Are not clinically justified, safe and effective.
