So what caused the accident, was that um he ran a red light. I was on my way to work and he hit me as I was crossing the Upfield bike path on my way to work. I was in a coma for three weeks.
I have a brain injury, um he smashed my pelvis which required an internal plate, a collapsed lung, a couple of broken ribs, but the brain injury is a big thing and that's caused probably six months’ worth of memory loss.
I've been told that I was riding um to Melbourne Uni, going to play for performance class because I was a pianist.
So I was a classical pianist for about three decades and uh the smash has caused spasticity in half my body, including my hand, um so I don't play. Left a huge hole in my life because that was my life for 30 years. I'm grieving, still.
I suppose what I'd like to say to a future offender, is that there are lots of other people like me who are seriously injured who've had their lives ruined by a stupid mistake and I really wouldn't like to have to have that on my conscience.
The smash changed my life in countless ways so getting a fine for running a red light isn't the end of the world. And
I ask you to consider the TAC's Safe Driving Commitment.
There's a lot to learn from Claire's story. A driver came through a red light and almost killed Claire, leaving her with permanent injuries that impacted her entire life. If you'd like to know more, we encourage you to hear Claire’s story.
Consequences of not following road rules can be much worse than a fine, so please reconsider your driving behaviour so that everyone can get home safely.
Commit to safer driving
Below is an opportunity to reflect and make your own personal commitment to safer driving behaviour. I urge you to consider it. At the very least, it'll help you avoid more fines - and at the most, it could save a life.
Sincerely, Claire
I, , commit to joining the rest of Victoria in driving safely.
- I will drive within the speed limit and approach traffic lights with caution, as if my loved ones are on the road ahead.
- I will be attentive, mindful and patient with other drivers to help everyone arrive safely at their destination.
No personal details are collected as part of this commitment.
