So what caused this accident? Three young 18 year olds in the car, the driver was on his phone. They weren't speeding, um but he obviously was concentrating on his phone more than the road.
And left the road. And ended up in quite a bad way.
The accident was really severe, um the car hit a concrete fence punching the driver probably from the car a foot, a foot and a half into, into the vehicle. We first removed the passenger from the vehicle. The person in the back seat was the lucky one.
Still hurt, but not as badly as, the passenger and definitely not as badly as the driver. We kept on going to extract the driver from the vehicle and another ambulance rolled up. They put a heart monitor on him to see, there was nothing there. He was pronounced dead on scene.
He's only a young kid too probably about the same age as my son. So all all i can say is don't use your mobile phone. If you go home, that's worth more than anything else. A fine is not the worst thing that can happen to you.
Please consider the TAC Safe Driving Commitment.
There's a lot to learn from Mark's story. As an SES volunteer, he witnessed the death of a driver who took his eyes off the road to use his phone illegally for a moment. If you'd like to know more, we encourage you to hear Mark’s story.
Consequences of not following road rules can be much worse than a fine, so please reconsider your driving behaviour so everyone can get home safely.
Commit to safer driving
Below is an opportunity to reflect and make your own personal commitment to safer driving behaviour. I urge you to consider it. At the very least, it'll help you avoid more fines - and at the most, it could save a life.
Sincerely, Mark
I, , commit to joining the rest of Victoria in driving safely.
- I will keep my eyes on the road, put my phone on ‘do not disturb’ or out of reach, and respond safely when I get to my destination.
- I will be attentive, mindful and patient with other drivers, to help everyone arrive safely.
No personal details are collected as part of this commitment.
